Book: Holes by Louis Sachar

SETTING AND THEME

    The setting is at a camp called Camp Green Lake, where bad kids go to dig holes in the ground. Precisely why this book is named Holes! This book takes place between the months of May and June. I don't know what year, but it seems like it could happen in the present. The setting of Camp Green Lake affects the plot of the story by making it seem like it was a lake in the past, but a barren lake bed in the story. This also makes me wonder: Why is the lake bed soft enough to dig, but the sun beats down really hot on the characters? Anyway...The themes of this story are as follows: dishonesty, friendship, loyalty, and
perseverance. Dishonesty is a theme because the camp is scamming the parents, because they think it is a lake with fun activities but is really a prison-like camp for bad kids. Friendship is a theme because the protagonist and Zero are friends, and the protagonist is teaching Zero to write. Loyalty is a theme because when Zero ran away, the protagonist went after him. Perseverance is a theme because the protagonist persevered as he was digging holes and wouldn't quit. The moral of this story is: don't judge a book by its cover. The camp is not what you think it is, and the kids aren't bad like the camp says they are.

CHARACTER TRAITS

    The protagonist of this story is Stanley Yelnats. He was sent to Camp Green Lake because of stealing shoes(?). Stanley has some very interesting traits and has some less interesting traits. One trait is that he has a good heart. He didn't mean to steal the shoes; they just kinda...fell on him. Another trait is that he is a good liar(:D). He writes to his mom about swimming, but he is just digging holes. The trait that most affected the resolution of this story is that he has perseverance, as he stuck to digging those holes, and persevered as he was wandering around with the minor character who ran away, and he never gave up. He didn't give up as he was digging those holes even with the blisters and the blood on his hands. He didn't give up as he was wandering around with his friend, trying to find their way back to Camp Green Lake. Stanley's perseverance led to him finding the trunk with Zero! Two of the minor characters who helped Stanley Yelnats were a kid nicknamed Zero, who ran away from Camp Green Lake,and a kid nicknamed Squid, who has a great sense of humor, and also stuck up for him when he tripped over another kid who was angry.

CONFLICT AND RESOLUTION

    The main conflict in this story is between Stanley and the curse that he believes he has. He thinks this because of his great-great-grandfather, who apparently might have stolen a pig for a wife. It sounds weird, but he had to take a pig up a mountain and letting it drink from a stream while the great-great-grandfather sung to it. The problem was resolved when Stanley, named Caveman at the time, dug the last hole at Camp Green Lake and found the chest and later realized it was his family's. At that point in time Stanley found out that he didn't have a curse. There probably wasn't even a curse in the first place. He learned about himself that his loyalty, friendship, and perseverance is more important than an imaginary curse.

CONCLUSION
